Royal was contracted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to design and construct the relocation and renovation of the human resources department for G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center campus in Jackson, Mississippi. The project included a full REVIT/BIM model of the existing facility and inclusion of all upgrades which enabled the final design product to be experienced virtually by the client before construction began. Royal performed all design and construction engineering services for the renovation which included utilizing the VA Barrier Free guide.

Design focused on usability, convenience and energy efficiency following current LEED guidelines and included re-design of mechanical, electrical, and data utilities. The project upgraded facilities currently in use and combined them with adjacent areas used for storage and files. Design was coordinated with other remediation/remodeling efforts to ensure compatibility of design features and to reduce maintenance spares. Scope was expanded to include remediation of asbestos containing materials.

The project was constructed in three consecutive phases to allow movement of personnel and continuous operation. When Phase 1 construction (conversion of storage areas) was complete, personnel was relocated from offices currently in use into the new offices to allow conversion of older facilities as Phase 2 construction. A similar pattern applied to Phase 3. Because of the nature of the facility and the requirement for remediation of hazardous materials, most of the work was executed outside the Medical Center’s normal operating hours.
